Our Mission Statement & Core Values

The NCOTA’s mission is to promote the continued and competent practice of occupational therapy; to impact health care, legislative, and reimbursement communities as advocates for the consumer and the profession; and to be responsive to the needs of the membership by promoting professional education, communication, and monitoring trends in health care and in the community that affect the practice of occupational therapy.

Our History & Background

NCOTA was founded in 1957 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1976. In 1984 the association led the drive for licensure in NC. Since that time the field of OT in NC has grown from a few hundred licensed occupational therapy practitioners to over 5,400.

Our Current Projects & Mental Health Initiatives

The occupational therapy profession has always recognized the relationship between all aspects of health: mental, physical, and social. As such, all OT practitioners receive education and training needed to address mental health concerns in all practice settings across the lifespan, whether or not their primary practice area is in mental health. The NCOTA Mental Health Specialty Interest Section supports OT practitioners working in mental health settings, addressing mental health as part of another area, or who are interested in entering mental health as a primary practice area. Current projects include addressing the shortage of mental health providers by advocating for increased access to mental health-based OT services for all of the community. NCOTA also supports existing OT services in mental health such as psych inpatient services and in the state’s Transitions to Community Living Initiative.

Service areas:  Mental Health, (inpatient, community, outpatient, and emerging areas), Physical Disabilities, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Assistive Technology, School System, as well as other areas.

Students at our yearly conference help bring new ideas and enhance the field of occupational therapy.
