North Carolina Healthcare Association

On June 2, 1918, in Greensboro, Dr. J.F. Highsmith of Fayetteville proposed that the N.C. Committee on Hospital Standardization, made up of three physicians and three registered nurses, become the North Carolina Hospital Association. The next day, a constitution and bylaws were proposed stating that the objective of the association “shall be the promotion of economy and efficiency in hospital management and the welfare of hospitals and hospital workers in North Carolina.” Active membership required payment of an initiation fee of $3, plus annual dues of $5 per person. The first year, membership included 26 physicians and nurses. Dr. Highsmith served as the first President of the Association, reflective of the fact that most early hospitals in the state were organized by physicians. Today, NCHA includes a membership of more than 130 hospitals and health systems providing acute care, rehabilitative, behavioral, psychiatric and veterans’ services. In addition, many member health systems include wellness programs, primary care, urgent care, and freestanding emergency care. Industry consolidation has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of healthcare delivery in our state. As NCHA approached its Centennial year of service to its member hospitals, health systems and care providers, the NCHA Board of Trustees embarked on a process to evaluate the reputation of the association’s brand and chart a course for the future. Their visionary leadership has led to a new name and a new brand for the organization that not only respects our strong history, but is more inclusive and representative of the current and future membership.

Licensed Clinical Counselors of North Carolina

LCCNC’s origin dates back to many unmet professional needs of North Carolina’s Licensed Counselors. Before, 1995 advocacy for Licensed Counselors occurred sporadically, if at all. Licensed Counselor Continuing Education needs were not sufficiently addressed, often competing with other counseling education agendas. Then and now, the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA) did not have a division specifically dedicated to the Licensed Counselors.
In 1995, the establishment of the Licensed Clinical Counselors of North Carolina was founded to advance and address the needs of Licensed Professional Counselors working in a wide variety of settings.

Licensed Clinical Counselors serve a vital role in the mental health and wellbeing of North Carolina’s citizens. LCCNC works to advance the clinical mental health counseling profession by advocacy and professional excellence. LCCNC provides a voice for public policy, directs the activities of our professional lobbyist, and responds to the continuing education needs of LCMHCs in North Carolina.

Missions: Support the advancement of evidence-based mental health treatment protocols, encourage NC DPI to more fully utilize LCMHCs to address mental health concerns in North Carolina Schools, increase opportunities for LCMHCs to provide services for historically marginalized groups, support Integrated Care Efforts, update and Inform membership on the Interstate Compact Commission, and more…

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

In 1987, a small group of caring individuals had a vision: to establish a private source of support for suicide research and education, so that essential suicide prevention efforts could be sustained into the future. These founding families—each of whom had lost someone to suicide—joined with scientists to create what today is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, or AFSP. Many of our original founders were concerned about an alarming rise in youth suicide over the previous four decades. During this period, the suicide of young men had tripled, while for young women it had doubled. Before AFSP, there was no national-scope not-for-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy.

Since its founding in 1987, AFSP has mobilized and connected tens of thousands of people who have lost a family member, loved one, or friend to suicide, reached thousands of individuals who are at risk for suicide, as well as those who love and care for them, attracted the participation of members of the scientific and clinical communities, who conduct groundbreaking research on suicide and its prevention with support from AFSP, established local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and DC, educated hundreds of local communities about suicide and how to prevent it, created a public policy and lobbying arm by merging successfully with an existing national policy organization, thus enabling AFSP to press for legislation and policies at the federal, state and local levels that advance the goal of preventing suicide, substantially increased our funding from individual donors, including the thousands of highly motivated individuals who participate in our Out of the Darkness Walks, educated reporters and the media about how to best cover suicide, communicated with hundreds of thousands of individuals through our website, social media, brochures, speakers and efforts to generate press coverage.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

  • Funding scientific research

  • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention

  • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention

  • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide

In alignment with our national office, the North Carolina Chapter of the AFSP is focused on educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention by delivering evidence-based programs throughout our state, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide with our Healing Conversations program, International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day and at our Out of the Darkness Walks.

Support for Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts

Headquartered in NC, Carolina Complete Health understands the unprecedented devastation and damage caused by Hurricane Helene to Western North Carolina. Since the hurricane, Carolina Complete Health coordinated efforts with the Centene Foundation, NC Medical Society (NCMS), NC Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA), Kintegra Health, Community Care Physician Network (CCPN), WellCare NC, and other organizations to identify needs and deploy resources. This collaboration resulted in the procurement of supplies and the coordination of multiple weekly deliveries to impacted areas. Many of these supplies delivered to doctors’ offices ensured that they could continue to provide care to communities in need. During the holiday season, Carolina Complete Health worked with local grocery stores and food suppliers to deliver holiday meals to families and emergency workers in the region. Specifically, for Thanksgiving, we delivered 2,000 meals in Buncombe County. We also fulfilled the wishes of children affiliated with Youth Villages in Buncombe, Cherokee, and Haywood counties by purchasing and distributing gifts during the month of December.
