Senator Graig Meyer

Senator Graig Meyer has served in the North Carolina House of Representatives since 2013. He represents House District 50, serving constituents in portions of Orange and Caswell Counties.

Rep. Meyer has worked across party lines as the founding Co-Chair of two bipartisan, bicameral legislative caucuses, the Early Childhood Caucus and the Life Sciences Caucus. He also served as Co-Chair of the House Democratic Freshman Caucus during the 2015 and 2016 sessions and joined the Intellectual and Developmental Disability Caucus during the 2017 session. His current legislative committee assignments include Alcoholic Beverage Control, Appropriations, Education (K-12), Homeland Security, Military & Veteran Affairs, and Regulatory Reform.

In addition to serving on his legislative committees, Rep. Meyer was elected in 2016 as a member of the Public School Forum, and in 2018, Governor Cooper appointed him as a board member of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Rep. Meyer will also serve on the Legislative Advisory Council of the SREB, which is the nation’s first regional interstate compact for education, created in 1948 by Southern governors and legislators who recognized the link between education and economic vitality. The Southern Regional Education Board focuses on what works in both policy and practice, and continues its focus on critical issues that can help to improve the quality of life by advancing public education.

Rep. Meyer has been recognized for his legislative leadership by the League of Conservation Voters with their 2015 Green Tie Rising Star award and by the Young Democrats of North Carolina with their 2016 Legislator of the Year Award. His legislative advocacy has also been recognized by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons with a 2016 Capitol Caregiver Award for advancing policies to improve support for family caregivers. In addition, in 2015, Rep. Meyer was welcomed by STEMx, a national network of STEM proponents, as a member of the 2015 inaugural cohort of Fellows and then asked to serve as the chair of the 2017-2019 cohort. In 2018, Equality NC honored Rep. Meyer with the Pearl Berlin and Ellen Gerber Legislator Award for the tremendous difference he is making as a courageous and vocal proponent for LGBTQ equality and equity for all North Carolinians. In 2019 the NC Chamber of Commerce recognized him as a Jobs Advocate.

As a trained social worker, Rep. Meyer approaches legislation with an eye towards protecting those who are marginalized, vulnerable and oppressed. He successfully passed legislation to help families save money to care for their children with disabilities through adulthood; to help parents protect their children from online predators; to make it easier for families to set up guardianships for aging adults; and to help individuals and families by reducing the cost of home mortgage processing.

Prior to becoming a legislator, Rep. Meyer spent sixteen years working in North Carolina’s public schools. He continues to work with schools and youth-serving non-profits as the co-founder and principal consultant with The Equity Collaborative, LLC. In 2018, Rep. Meyer also published a book, More Than a Mentoring Program: Attacking Institutional Racism, which provides personal perspective and details about his experience as program coordinator of the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program in Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools.
