We recently spoke with Peter (MA Ed., LCMHCA), an Intensive In-Home team lead, who shared a story about a 15-year-old he recently treated. - Initially, the individual was truant and engaging in risky behaviors. After he and his family received valuable support from our services, he has made great progress. "Today, this young man is working towards becoming a firefighter with his local Volunteer Fire Department. He is also attending school with minimal absences. I am so proud of him. He worked hard to achieve the goal he created. He wanted to contribute to his community and be a part of something bigger than himself.” says Peter. The event was created by Gracie Parker, an 11-year-old youth mental health activist who shares her lived experience to raise awareness of the ongoing youth mental health crisis and advocate for school-based, trauma-informed support services for students of all ages across the state. We are thrilled to share Sammie's story during Mental Health Awareness Month! His journey began at our PORT Health’s Stepping Stone Manor, which provides clinically managed, low-intensity residential services for adult men diagnosed with a substance use disorder and also requires daily supervision. While going through the program, he was referred to Easterseals UCP’s Individual Placement & Support (IPS) program. This program specializes in helping individuals with severe and persistent mental illness find a job and maintain it. With the help of the IPS program, Sammie landed a warehouse job where he worked hard, earned his forklift certification, and secured a raise within weeks! He has graduated from Stepping Stone’s program and moved into a new apartment with his wife.
