Our History & Background

Established in 1972, Vaya began as a community mental health center and has grown into an organization that manages the care for individuals in 31 counties. Vaya is a public, managed care organization (MCO) that prioritizes whole-person health. We manage Medicaid, federal, state, and local funding to connect the people we serve to health care services and supports. Our specialty is helping individuals with needs related to mental health, substance use disorders, intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), and traumatic brain injury (TBI). We strive for members to receive the right care, in the right amount, at the right time.

Our Current Projects & Mental Health Initiatives

Adventure Awaits

Vaya has launched an innovative effort, with the support of Benchmarks, for the Adventure Awaits initiative, a word-of-mouth foster parent recruitment campaign launching Jan. 16, 2024.

As local agencies face a record-breaking shortage of foster care parents, participants in Vaya’s Pathways to Permanency project have developed the Adventure Awaits campaign to equip local Department of Social Services (DSS) offices and private child-placing organizations with a variety of materials for educating community members on the critical need for foster parents and encouraging them to learn more about what it means to become one.

Adventure Awaits aims to reach people who have never considered the rewarding experience of fostering a child and those who have considered fostering a child but haven’t taken the next steps. Adventure Awaits highlights the positive influence they can have in their communities by doing so.

Pathways to Permanency

Microenterprise

Building strong communities starts with supporting local businesses when possible. Many Vaya members with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities run their own small business. These businesses not only give them employment and income, but also a purpose, voice, and place in the community. Help our talented members by supporting their businesses and sharing the directory with others.

Housing Initiative

The Housing Supports Team works with community partners to provide knowledge, resources and training about housing and residential options. The team also operates the Transitions to Community Living Voucher as part of the Transitions to Community Living Initiative (TCLI), the Permanent Supportive Housing program, Non-Medicaid Residential Services, the Housing Supports Grant, the Independence Project and the Integrated Supportive Housing Program.
