Senator Danny Earl Britt, and Senator Jay Chaudhuri will be presented the Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health Bipartisan Award. This award has been created by the Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health Planning Committee to recognize bipartisan efforts on the part of members of the legislature to improve the lives of NC citizens. This award may not be given annually.
Senators Britt and Chaudhuri, sponsored Senate Bill 199, known as The SAFE Child Act, that will modernize sexual abuse laws, as well as strengthen enforcement and protection for children who have been abused. It will also close loopholes in existing sexual assault laws and strengthen penalties against child abusers. Previously, North Carolina lagged in the nation in addressing sexual assault laws, including consent revocation and incapacitation due to alcohol. The bill also provides for training for educators and access to appropriate treatment for victims. The bill was passed unanimously on October 31, 2019, signed into law on November 7, 2019, and took effect on December 1, 2019.
