Our Current Projects & Mental Health Initiatives

PEER EDUCATION
NAMI NC free education programs and support groups provide critical information and strategies for taking care of the person you love, but you will also find out that you are not alone. Recovery is a journey, and there is hope. Our programming is as follows:

Educational Programs:

Family-to-Family is a free, 12-week course taught by two trained volunteer teachers who themselves have a family member or loved one with a mental illness. In 2013, Family-to-Family was added to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.

NAMI Homefront is a free 8-session education program for family members, loved ones, and caregivers of active military servicemembers or veterans who exhibit symptoms of mental illness.

NAMI Basics is a free, 6-week education program for parents and family caregivers of children and teens who are experiencing symptoms of a mental illness or whom have already been diagnosed. In the NAMI Basics program you’ll learn the facts about mental health conditions and how best to support your child at home, at school and when they’re getting medical care.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free, 10-session educational program for adults with mental illness who are looking to better understand their condition and journey toward recovery.

NAMI Smarts for Advocacy is a free workshop that helps people living with mental illness, friends and family transform their passion and lived experience into skillful grassroots advocacy.

SUPPORT GROUPS:

There are two types of NAMI Support Groups. Both are peer-led, confidential and free of charge.
NAMI Family Support Groups are local meetings of family members, caregivers, friends, and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. Participants can talk frankly about their challenges and help one another through their learned wisdom.
NAMI Connection Recovery Support Groups are peer-based mutual support groups that meet for 90 minutes of safe, confidential personal sharing in a flexible group setting. The groups are open to any adult living with a mental illness and are designed to connect, encourage, and support participants using a structured support group model. The meetings are led by trained Support Group Facilitators living in recovery themselves.

Presentations:

In Our Own Voice is a unique presentation in which two trained speakers share their compelling personal stories of living with mental health challenges and achieving recovery.
Ending the Silence is a 50-minute mental health presentation for middle and high school aged youth available at no-cost to schools, youth clubs, and youth groups. It is presented by a trained group consisting of:

    • A young adult living with a mental health challenge, age 18-35
    • An adult living in recovery with mental illness or family member of an individual living with mental illness

State Advocacy:

By establishing a state-specific public policy platform, we provide strategic leadership to improve North Carolina’s mental health system, end discrimination, and reduce barriers to successful life in the community.

Raise Public Awareness:

NAMIWalks is a signature NAMI event that raises awareness and funds to provide support, education and advocacy programs at no cost to people within our community. Register for NAMIWalks and join the movement!
